Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s directorial debut “End of Summer” is MUBI daily selection yesterday. Captured with Super 8 image, the film brings us to the Southern part of the Earth, delivering us a visionary landscape that we’ve never seen before.

The sceneries are still, streams and penguins are moving slowly. Jóhannsson, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe’s score is wonderful. It’s a haunting journey of changing seasons, yet it feels like the time is freezing at the moment.

I just watched Jóhannsson’s last feature “Last and First Men” several months ago, which is a perfect echo to “End of Summer”. Jóhannsson took us to the edge of civilization, questioning the existence of humanity. His arresting image is as powerful as his music.

I still cannot believe that the world lost such a talented artist. And it breaks my heart.
